Mission

We form artists and professionals which promote the image using the new media in the visual expression and communication connected with the photography, the video image, the art asisted and generated by the computer, but also with the installation and the intermedia art. We assure the assimilation of a profound cultural found regarding the birth and the evolution of the traditional visual arts, as well as the avantgarde that characterizes the 20th century. We encourage the experiment as a main way to reach artistic originality.
In order to achieve these objectives, the activity within the department is oriented towards the following goals:
1. conceptual habit-forming education
Within the conceptual habit-forming education the fundamental theoretical notions are researched, also the place of the photo image, of the video and digital art within the contemporary culture and their relation with the other art forms; all these are correlated with history of art and of photography, of the video and digital art, aesthetics and philosophy. Such an habit-forming instruction opens to the students at least 3 directions regarding their options: to become creators of photo imjages or video having serious, contemporary conceptual knowledge in the field; to become creators of digital art (graphic design, animation, multimedia, video installations); to become promoters of the photo image, video or digital art in the field of the art theory.
2. technical habit-forming education (theoretical and practical)
The technical habit-forming education's (theoretical and practical) purpose is the theoretical knowledge of the classical and new equipments, technologies and materials, such as forming the practical skills in operating with them in order to make full conceptual and technical quality images, in agreement with the international standards. Within this type of education the students are learning the digital procedures of editing the images on the computer. The students will explore a wide range of possibilities in expression - from the clasical photo and video image to the one edited in a photo lab or to the unlimited pissibilities offered by the new software applications.
3. the habit-forming education regarding the concrete finality of the photo image, of the video or of the computer generated image
The habit-forming education regarding the concrete finality of the photo image, of the video or of the computer generated image is based on the study of the theoretical concepts and of the practical methods and procedures in elaborating and editing the photo, video or digital images all the way to the finished product and to the consumer. Due to this type of education the future promoters of the photo, video and digital images are formed and they are destined to work in publishing or advertising companies or in television.

In photography:
The photo-video department's graduates are trained to realize all kinds of creative photographs, starting with the metaphoric image to the promotional or documentary one. During the years of studies a special attention is given both to the expressive quality and to the technical aspect of the photographic image. KNowing and practicing both the classical and the avant-garde photography, the graduates can join the new steps that characterize the 2 complementary orientation of the research in the field of image. The education process harmoniously combines the knowledge from the history of art and photography with the elements and the new orientations within the contemporary visual arts.
In video:
The graduates earn competencies in recording the dymanic image (video), in its editing and post-processing, covering 2 distinct fields: the promotional video image and the video art.
-a) Concerning the promotional dynamic image the focus is on the advertising and on realizing the logo of a TV station or firm.
-b) The department's graduates have the knowledge and practice a wide range of expressions in the video art, making video productions based on visual metaphors, video installations or visual experiments.
In computerized image processing:
The computer is used within the department both as an instrument to digitally process/handle the photo-video image and as an independent mean of creation, having specific valences. The graduates poses competencies in digital processing of the static images (drawings, photos), in making specific graphic-design projects (posters, catalogues, magazines or other publications), but also in the field of digital processing the dynamic images (digital post-processing of the video image, 2D and 3D animation). Also, the graduates can make specific multi-media objects: CD's and Web Sites and they can also be involved in computer art.
In intermedia:
The graduates can also be creatively involved in intermedia fields - a mixture of the visual art fields, some of them being thaught within the department: drawing, colour, photo, video, mixed media, installation, performance.
In art education:
The department's graduates, which during the years of studies have passed the exams within the pedagogic seminar, can become art teachers in secondary schools and in the universities having the right of teaching the specific disciplines that they have learnt in our University.
